Security chiefs propose 15-minute delay on rolling news coverage

UK security chiefs are proposing that a 15-minute delay should be imposed on rolling news broadcasters in some terrorism-related situations.

According to the Sunday Times, security officials have made the suggestion to broadcasters via a secretive group called the media emergency forum.

Apparently concerns were raised by the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008 in which 168 people died. There is evidence that hostage takers were able to use live news reports to gain information about the deployment of police and special forces.

Executive director of the Society of Editors Bob Satchwell told the Sunday Times: “This was a request for co-operation and discussion not an attempt at censorship. We would have no truck with the latter.”
