Politico expands European team with former Times and Reuters reporters

By Matthew Gilley

US-based news service Politico has added former Times and Reuters reporters to its new European team, bringing the total number of journalists hired for the venture to 36.

Alex Spence, former media editor of The Times, will be Politico’s European media correspondent, based in London.

Stephen Brown, former chief Germany correspondent for Reuters, will be based in Brussels as deputy managing editor for news.

Politico, which covers politics and policy making, is launching its European edition online on 21 April, and a weekly print edition on 23 April.

The publisher has partnered with major German publisher Axel Springer for the expansion, which will be based in Brussels, but with reporters working across the continent.

The newspaper will be distributed in Brussels, Berlin, Paris, London and Luxembourg, with an initial run of 25,000 to 30,000 copies.

In the US, Politico claims a 35,000 weekday circulation and up to 8m unique users a month online.

Its US newspaper is available free in locations throughout Washington and US subscriptions cost $200 (£135) or $600 (£406) for overseas readers. It also has “select availability” in New York.

Politico, which was founded in 2007 and claims to have around 150 editorial staff based in the US, has also had a magazine since November 2013 which comes out six times a year. It has published a subscription-based policy news web service, Politico Pro – which covers agriculture, campaigns, cybersecurity, defence, education, "eHealth", energy, financial services, health care, tax, technology, trade and transportation – since 2011.

Politico said that with the European launch it will have “more reporters in the two main political and regulatory centers of the world – Washington and Brussels – than any other publication”.

Spence resigned from The Times last month.
