Editor Paul Lay said he hopes the October edition’s new look, which he said is based on early editions of the magazine, will bring “greater clarity and coherence” to its readers.

He said: “We are hoping that circulation will increase with the new look of the magazine. It feels more like a substantial read now, it feels more like a professional magazine.”historyspread by you.

A new series of features called ‘From the archive’will present historians’ analysis of articles from the magazine’s archives in the light of the latest historical research.

Lay said: “What we have got to do is make people understand the nature of practising history.”

Launched in 1951, History Today delivers historical writing, research and analysis and has an audited circulation of 23,000.

Lay sent Press Gazette a selection of front pages to show how History Today has changed through the decades.
