NUJ eschews subtle approach in DC Thomson recruitment campaign

By Dominic wireposts

The National Union of journalists has opted to take the direct approach in its campaign to recruit members at DC Thomson – by parking an advertising van outside the publisher’s Dundee headquarters.
The union is also staging an open meeting for journalists at DC Thomson’s Sunday Post newspaper at its offices on 114 Union Street, Glasgow, tonight at 6.30 pm.
According to the NUJ, DC Thomson employs around 2,000 journalists on titles which also include the Dundee Courier, Evening Telegraph, Sunday Post and of course The Beano and the Dandy comics.
It says that “union membership was never a priority when the family-run business adopted a paternalistic approach to its employees, rewarding them well for their good service and loyalty” but it claims “that paternalism has ended with a series of hammer blows to the workers in quick succession, which have left the workforce reeling”.
According to the union this has included an increase in working hours, pay freeze and the possiblity of a pay cut for those on higher salaries.
