NUJ delegate meeting 2011: Dear bows out, NUJ votes not to destroy itself, attack on unpaid internships…

By Dominic wireposts

Student journalists have done a comprehensive job of reporting the National Union of Journalists delegate meeting in Southport over the weekend.

Here are some of the highlights:

A motion suggesting the NUJ should effectively kill itself off and become a general union for media workers was withdrawn.

The low number of black journalists at the delegate meeting and across the media was branded a disgrace.

Some practical advice for aspiring journalists on how to get paid for internships.

Mary Beilby and Anita Halpin were awarded Member of Honour status for their long-serving commitment to the NUJ.

Audio: New NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet on her shock at being elected unopposed to replace Jeremy Dear.

Audio: Delegates narrowly voted against returning to holding the delegate meeting annually.

And a report of the debate, which resulted in the delegate meeting continuing to happen every 18 months.

Exiled journalists thanked the NUJ for support in their fights against deportation including Charles Atangana from Cameroon:

I’m lucky to be part of a wonderful and supportive union. I am proud to be a member of the NUJ, it is because of them that I am here today. To say thank you isn’t enough.”

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear bowed out with attack on unpaid journalism internships:

“(To) those who unlawfully exploit the dreams of young journalists looking for their first step on the career ladder (the message) should be clear – there are now no more hiding places. I’ve always wanted to say this – see you in court!”
