New kit lets BBC radio reporters file live audio over web

By paulmcnally

BBC Radio 4 used the New Hampshire presidential primaries to test out a new piece of kit which allows reporters to feed live audio back to the studio over the internet.

The World This Weekend presenter Shaun Ley used the Comrex Access box to present a series of live links using his hotel’s wi-fi connection and VOIP technology.

Writing in this week’s edition of BBC in-house magazine Ariel, Radio News studio manager Lee Chaundy says the box is “a huge breakthrough” for the corporation, which until now has had to use expensive ISDN lines or pay £3 a minute for a satellite phone.

“If we’d used a satellite for the two days, it would have cost about £13,000. ISDN installations would have been around £500… [Broadcasting using the Comrex] cost us absolutely nothing.”
