Rupert Murdoch’s promise to start charging for online news does not look set to spark a rush towards raising paywalls amongst rival publishers.
Head of digital for Daily Mail publisher DMGT’s Associated Northcliffe Digital Richard Titus told the FT: “The idea that there is going to be direct as opposed to indirect monetisation of content is a challenging one.” Adding that he believes advertising will remain the dominant revenue stream online for newspapers.
News industry analyst Ken Doctor said the Murdoch move just shows the “continued insularity of newspaper publishers”.
