The crime and investigations editor of Indian newspaper Mumbai was shot dead on Saturday by four men riding motorcycles in what was apparently a contract killing.
The 56-year-old journalist had been writing stories about Mumbai’s ‘oil mafia’ exploring the links between criminals and politicians.
Executive editor of the paper Kalbag said in a statement: “Mr Dey was one of the pillars of the Mid Day newsroom for the last four years, and as one of the senior most investigative journalists in the country, was an invaluable asset to the newspaper. He brought depth to our investigative reporting, and he conducted his journalism with honesty and integrity.”
Journalism is a frighteningly lonely profession. Journalists work in teams, but when it comes to taking responsibility for their work, they stand alone in the firing line.
Jyotirmoy Dey, Mid Day’s crime and investigations editor, was a journalist in the truest sense of the word. He was fearless (so fearless that his fearlessness often scared me); he was honest; his integrity was beyond reproach and just about everyone he worked with treated him as a friend, not a colleague.
