Peter Wilby argues in the MediaGuardian that the Ministry of Defence has “had its cake and was allowed by the media to eat it as well”. He says he understands why the media agreed to the deal and that judging by the public reaction, they got it right.
But he says: “Please spare us praise for the editors’ responsible behaviour and public spirit. They did what they thought best for their news operations, sales and brand images.”
Stephen Glover, writing in the Independent’s media section says that the suppression of the story was justificable since the media did not sit on a story that discredited Prince Harry but simply delayed reporting one to his credit. “It is difficult to see how anyone, apart from the Taliban, has suffered,” he says.
Besides, adds Glover, arguing the toss on media suppression is not worth it because agreements like these are unlikely to be kept in the future.
