Miami Herald asks readers for donations

By Press Gazette

Faced with the prospect of rapidly vanishing profits, the Miami Herald is asking readers for donations.

All stories on the paper’s website will have a tab that links readers to a credit card payment site. The McClatchy-run paper is asking its readers to: “Support ongoing news coverage.”

The Herald’s website claims it is “South Florida’s most-read news destination on the web” but is facing a double digit decline in print circulation.

The payment system is similar to the one that Wikimedia uses to fund its operations. Any amount can be donated, unlike Wikimedia’s site there is no suggested donation.
