The Financial Times is recruiting journalists for a new online service called Fast FT to be launched later this year.
Last month the FT revealed that it was seeking to cut 35 editorial jobs, but was creating 10 new positions, in changes associated with the shift from print to digital production.
Production journalists are bearing the brunt of the cutbacks while new reporting positions are being created.
In an interview with The Guardian, FT editor Lionel Barber reveals that a new service called Fast FT is to be launched last this year. This will be based around providing more live breaking news.
According to The Guardian, the FT will have 575 journalists after the net reduction in positions. This makes it far better resourced than The Guardian, Independent and Daily Telegraph (and possibly The Times too).
The FT has been talking about integrating print and digital, streamlining the edition structure and placing more emphasis on digital breaking news since at least 2006. Back then the paper made 50 editorial redundancies as part of changes aimed at creating "an editorial organisation fully equipped to meet the challenge of the digital age".
