Lawyers’ fear of journalists is compromising their ability to represent their clients effectively.
That’s the view of Campbell Deane, a lawyer for the Scotsman and Scottish Daily Mail, who is quoted in the Sunday Herald as saying that lawyers should seek to engage with reporters rather than say nothing.
Deane, who is speaking at the Lawyers’ Guide to the Media summit next month in Glasgow, said: “There is a perception that the press will stitch you up. So rather than speak to a journalist a lawyer will advise a client to put out a statement or not make a statement at all.”
