John Kampfner was rumoured to have been urging a management buyout at the New Statesman last summer, reports the Independent.
Kampfner, the editor of the current affairs weekly until his departure last month, had reportedly encouraged the buyout after NS publisher Geoffrey Robinson curtailed spending at the magazine.
The Independent speculates that Robinson did not sell in the end and froze budgets as a way of forcing Kampfner out.
