June launch planned for blogger’s political monthly

By Martin Stabe wirepost

Political blogger Iain Dale has found a “rich and powerful backer” for the monthly political magazine that he plans to launch in June.

Dale first announced plans for the magazine in December, using the working title The Politico. It has now been re-named Total Politics.

According to Dale’s blog, the Total Politics has already recruited six staff. It plans to launch in June with a cover price of around £3.50 with an annual subscription rate £37.80. However, it will operate as a free controlled circulation title for all elected officials in Britain from Parliament to district councillor level.

Following last week’s departure of New Statesman editor John Kampfner and the closure of The Business, Dale wrote on his blog this weekend: “Luckily Total Politcs has a very different business model to the New Statesman or The Business, but I am under no illusion about how many magazines fail in their first year.”

Speaking to the FT, Dale was more bullish: “It will have to make a thumping great profit – it’s being run on a fully commercial basis.”
