John Fry, chief executive of regional publishing group Johnston Press, was awarded £959,000 in pay, benefits and bonuses in 2009.
The Scotsman, a Johnston Press newspaper, reported yesterday on figures from the group’s annual report that showed Fry’s package included a £210,000 cash bonus and a £210,000 shares bonus, which was deferred for three years. His basic salary was £525,000.
Earlier this month, Johnston Press reported a statutory pre-tax loss of £113.8m for 2009 as it wrote down the value of its newspaper titles and wrote off the cost of printing presses which were closed in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Fry joined Johnston Press in January last year from the privately-owned newspaper group Archant as the replacement for then chief executive, Tim Bowdler.
