Justice Secretary Jack Straw has waded into the battle between Trinity Mirror’s Fulham and Hammersmith Chronicle and a newspaper run by its local authority.
Speaking at a Newspaper Conference lunch, Straw referred to ‘the spat that the Hammersmith local paper is having with Hammersmith and Fulham Council’over the council-run H&F News.
The Newspaper Society reported Straw saying: ‘I am on the side of the papers and not the councils.”
Earlier this week the Chronicle stepped up its campaign again H&F News, a free fortnightly paper delivered to 75,000 homes in the borough.
Straw, who writes a weekly column for the Lancashire Telegraph, told a Newspaper Conference lunch that local papers are ‘fundamental importance to the workings of our democracy.”
