The Information Commissioner has ordered the House of Commons to release detailed breakdowns of MPs’ expenses.
Richard Thomas has ruled there was a “legitimate public interest” for MPs’ spending to be broken down into categories such as travel, staffing, IT and stationery.
The ruling follows a Freedom of Information request asking for details of travel spending in 2003/04 – broken down by mode of transport – relating to a number of MPs, including Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Michael Howard and Charles Kennedy.
