Guardian continues Australian assault with deputy editor appointment

The Guardian has appointed Lee Glendinning as deputy editor of Guardian Australia.

The appointment of Glendinning, who has been with the paper in Australia since 2010, marks further evidence of The Guardian’s efforts to build its audience in the country.

It launched an Australian website in May following the capture of a pair of senior journalists from domestic titles. Political editor Lenore Taylor joined from the Sydney Morning Herald, while her deputy Katharine Murphy joined from the Melbourne Age, where she had been national affairs correspondent.

Glendinning is also an alumnus of the Syndey paper, leaving the title in 2005 to join The Guardian in London. She returned to Australia to become the editor of its Asia Pacific site, before becoming Guardian Australia news editor earlier this year.

Guardian Australia editor-in-chief Katharine Viner said: “Lee is at the heart of all that we do on Guardian Australia. She has fantastic judgment and excellent ideas; she really understands the Guardian and works incredibly hard. She'll make a brilliant deputy editor.”

Glendinning added: It has been a fantastic experience to be a part of the team that launched the Guardian in my home country. I've loved watching Australian readers engaging with the site with such enthusiasm, as I always thought they would. I'm really excited about the future of Guardian Australia."
