Guardian accused of breaking deal and identifying nursing home resident

By Dominic wireposts

The Guardian has been criticised for allegedly identifying an elderly woman and breaching an agreement that all identities in a feature about Monmouth Court nursing home would be protected.

The photo illustrated a G2 story about a home “where elderly people are left by their families to die”.

Guardian photographer David Levene and picture editor Roger Tooth kept the woman’s face hidden, Guardian reader’s editor Siobhain Butterworth reports, but the picture showed her wedding and engagement rings, the pattern on her dress and the fact she was wearing a watch with a thin leather strap.

A man said the picture was of his recently deceased mother who regarded Monmouth Court care home as akin to a five-star hotel. But nursing home owner Bupa has said that the picture was someone else.
