Conde Nast has come under fire after preventing an article which is highly critical of Russian president Vladimir Putin being distributed in the country.
The article, headlined Vladimir Putin’s Dark Rise to Power, appeared in the US edition of GQ. But according to The Guardian, not only was it witheld from the Russian edition – it has also been prevented from appearing online in the country.
Russian GQ editor Nikolai Uskov said the article was not run because it did not contain any new allegations.
US website Gawker has published the article in full and asked its readers to translate it into Russian, which they have done.
The row rather overshadows GQ’s Man of The Year awards which held in London last night.
The prize for newspaper editor of the year went to James Harding, of The Times, who also picked up the newspaper of the year prize at the British Press Awards in March.
GQ said: “James Harding may have passed on the MPs’ expenses scandal – handing rival editor Will Lewis a gift of a story for the Daily Telegraph – but in every other respect he has had a truly great year. Since becoming editor of the Times nearly two years ago, the 39-year-old has revitalised the title, injecting a broad intellectualism that can be seen in every section.”
