FT appeal raises almost £2.7m for child literacy programme

By admin

The Financial Times Christmas appeal to support child literacy in the developing world has raised £2,689,833.

The money was raised on behalf of Room to Read, a charity which builds libraries and schools and publishes local language children’s books and supports girls’ education in south and south-east Asia and southern Africa.

Contributions from readers totalled £792,111 but the total was boosted by special fund-raising events and matching donations from companies and foundations.

‘A gala wine-tasting evening hosted by Jancis Robinson, the FT’s wine writer, held at Le Café Anglais, the London restaurant of Rowley Leigh, the chef and FT’s food columnist, with wines donated by Wines of South Africa, raised £993,979. An online auction organised by Quintessentially, the private members’ club, raised £55,269.”
