The face of ITN News At Ten, Sir Trevor McDonald, has been criticised by former colleagues for his accusations that former ITN colleague Reggie Bosanquet was drinking on the job, reports The Daily Mirror.
In an interview with wine magazine Decanter in July McDonald revealed how he often drank a bottle of wine after work, and reminisced about his career in the 70s. He said: ‘My co-anchor Reggie Bosanquet had to be dragged out at five minutes to 10. How we carried on working I’ll never know.”
Angry responses to McDonald’s claims have been publishes in September’s issue of ITN’s 1955 Club newsletter for past and current staff.
Among them is former ITN journalist, Frank Miles, who said: “To say, as Trevor does, that Reggie would be in the wine bar opposite until five minutes to transmission is a lie.”
McDonald responded to the comments by claiming he had been taken out of context.
He said: “Reggie was a good friend and colleague. These were lighthearted comments made during an interview with a trade magazine which, regrettably, would appear to have been taken out of context. It was clearly never my intention to suggest that Reggie had to be physically dragged to the newsroom.”
