Former Echo journalist caught up in Kenya violence

By Martin Stabe wirepost

Former South Wales Echo journalist Sarah Elderkin, has given her former paper a first-hand e-mail account of the violence that has followed the disputed election in Kenya.

Elderkin moved to to Wales in 1994 and studied at Cardiff University, and worked at both the South Wales Echo and the Western Mail.

For the last 18 months, Elderkin was working at the heart of the troubles as a personal assistant to opposition leader Raila Odinga. She has also been ghostwriting his autobiography.

Depsite the violence, she has no plans to leave Kenya, Elderkin told the Echo.

“Spontaneous violence could lead to anything, but I try to take only calculated risks,” she said.

“If you believe in something and are committed enough to it, that overrides other feelings.
“I’ve been in this fight for a better life for the majority of Kenyans for a long time. I could leave. I have a life in Britain. But until the book I came to do is complete, and this situation is resolved, I don’t think I shall do that.”
