FOI review should reflect changed public sector boundaries, says Straw

By Patrick

The Justice Secretary Jack Straw has said that the on-going government consultation into the Freedom of Information Act 2000 should reflect how the boundaries between the private and public sectors have changed.

In response to parliamentary question from Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker, Straw said: “As the boundary between the public and private sectors for the delivery of what are essentially public services has moved, so we believe that the [FOI] arrangements should move as well.”

Baker, a well-known advocate of the act, asked Straw why it was that the British Potato Council was covered by the act but powerful regulatory bodies such as Network Rail were not.
