England footballer wins continuation of media privacy gag

By Dominic wireposts

An un-named England footballer last night won the continuation of a High Court injunction preventing press revelations about his private life.

The injunction was originally granted on 19 August. The man is one of at least two England internationals currently using High Court injunctions to suppress “private” information. Because the very existence of some injunctions is secret, this is a difficult area to report upon with any certainty.

According to the BBC, QC for the footballer Ian Tomlinson said the order was not a “super injunction” – one so secret that even its existence could not be revealed.

He said: “It is an injunction which does not seek to conceal its own identity, but seeks to conceal the identity of the claimant and the defendant because it is an injunction which relates to private information.”

Golfer Colin Montgomerie has also recently resorted to a High Court injunction to keep secret details which an individual had sought to reveal to the press.
