Don McCullin returns to frontline to chronicle ‘utterly miserable’ plight of Syrian people for The Times

By Dominic Ponsford

Renowned war photographer Don McCullin has returned for one last trip to the frontline at the age of 77 – covering the conflict in Syria for six days with Anthony Loyd of The Times.

Loyd said: "He worked, sometimes under fire, for six days in Aleppo, was detained by rebels..jostled by an angry crowd, crawled tirelessly through mousehole positions connecting rebel positions in the urban frontline".

It had been nine years since McCullin covered the war in Iraq, and he told The Times that he does not plan to return to war again. Of the situation in Syria he said: "It's purely and utterly miserable…dreadful for the people. I'm the man who can leave."

In a moving front page report, Loyd reported on the "almost mundane" slaughter of civilians in Aleppo where the two million inhabitants are now facing the prospect of starving to death.

It's worth noting that McCullin's images are available to all behind the paywall until 4pm today.

In 2005, McCullin was named by Press Gazette as one of the 40 most influential UK journalists of the modern era.
