The amazing story of a woman faced with the heart-breaking choice over which child to save after her car plunged into a dyke made the front page of the Daily Mail last week.
But the real work of uncovering the story was done by journalists on the Derby Telegraph, which splashed on the story a day before – Steve Dyson reveals on his Holdthefrontpage blog.
He reveals that Derby journalists uncovered the story after spotting a funeral announcement in the births, deaths and marriages classified ad pages of their own paper, Dyson reports.
The notice only revealed that Jack Brennan had died in an accident. Derby Telegraph journalist Rachel Butler did the rest – with quotes from both parents and a photo which was used the next day by the Daily Mail (both titles are owned by Daily Mail and General Trust).
Another local press story which went national this week was that of teenager Luke Angel who has been banned from America for life after sending President Obama an offensive email.
The story was uncovered by Bedfordshire on Sunday reporter Keeley Knowles, as Paul Linford reports – also on HTFP. Today it appears in most of the UK national newspapers and has also gone around the world.
