Northcliffe Media’s Derby Telegraph and Nottingham Post have been printed outside the region for the first time.
The BBC reports that both titles are now being printed in Birmingham – a move the National Union of Journalists claimed put the newspapers at risk of damaging their reputations as ‘credible, local publications”.
Nottingham Trent University media lecturer Dr Matt Ashton was quoted as saying:
It reflects the fact that a lot of the print industries in this country are in decline and are having to make economies of scale.

Problems they’ve got going forward include inflation, the rising cost of printing the paper, the rising cost of journalism and their audience is getting older.
While reporters and staff will remain in Nottingham and Derby the BBC claimed the Nottingham Post could move from its base at Castle Wharf and that Northcliffe ‘wants the newspaper to find cheaper premises”.
Four Northcliffe titles have switched from daily to weekly publication in the last year: the Lincolnshire Echo, the Exeter Express & Echo, the Scunthorpe Telegraph and the Torquay Herald Express.
