The Daily Mirror has made picture editor Greg Bennett redundant as part of a cost-cutting exercise that involves a senior level management shakeup and the axing of some senior roles, reports Media Guardian.
These latest cutbacks at Trinity Mirror are part of the company’s plans to cut costs by £20m after a “serious downturn in advertising” led to a 16 per cent annual profit slump.
Bennett left the paper last week after accepting voluntary redundancy. He will not be replaced.
Mirror news editor Anthony Harwood has been made head of news following Gary Jones move to deputy editor of the People in June, and night news editor Barry Rabbetts will replace Harwood as news editor.
There will be no deputy news editor as Euan Stretch, currently in the role, has been made the paper’s south of England correspondent and will not be replaced.
The role of assistant news editor has also been abolished as Jane Kerr leaves the post to take the role of features editor at the Sunday Mirror.
Foreign editor Mark Ellis has been made the paper’s specialist reporter, focusing on transport, trade and industry, with no one filling his shoes on the foreign desk.
In July this year the company called for voluntary redundancies as it merged some subbing operations across the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and the People, with 11 subeditors made redundant.
