News of the World editor Colin Myler has said that his reporters should use subterfuge to uncover stories of corruption.
In an interview with today’s Independent, he said that the jailing of royal editor Clive Goodman for illegal phone tapping a year ago was not part of a wider culture.
He said: “Did newspapers and journalists sail close to the wind? Probably, yes. Is subterfuge something newspapers should engage in? Absolutely, if it’s in the public interest. We root out the bad guys, we root out bad practice, we root out injustice.”
Myler also spoke of how he had brought his newspaper “out of the DVD market” and had gone from giving away 40m free discs in a year to none now.
