Channel 4's future has been secured for another 10 years with broadcast regulator Ofcom agreeing to extend its licence until 2025.
The current C4 licence expires at the end of this year and the renewal follows a public consultation on whether the terms of the licence should be changed.
Under the new licence, Channel 4 is required from 2020 to treble the amount of output it broadcasts from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – from 3 to 9 per cent.
Channel 4 estimates that this will require an additional £12m spend in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined, above its current annual spend of £20m.
The rest of Channel 4's public service broadcasting remit, including news and current affairs output, remains unchanged.
Representatives from Channel 4 are due to be questioned about election broadcasting by the Lords communications select committee later this afternoon.
