The total number of compulsory redundancies in the axing of 1,800 jobs at the BBC could drop from between 250 and 270 to just 50, according to the Guardian.
In a bid to plug an estimated £2bn funding gap director general Mark Thompson announced last year that 2,500 posts at the BBC would be axed, 1,800 of which redundancies.
Unions are in negotiation with the broadcaster, the final figure expected in April.
