The pub is the place where journalists traditionally get their best stories – so Australian journalists may be alarmed by a ruling from the Australian Press Council that journalists should not interview drunk people.
It has upheld a complaint lodged by a family friend of an 18-year-old woman whose photo, and comments about drinking and behaving like a “ladette” were used the front page of The Sunday Age.
The Press Council agreed that because the girl was drunk – she could not give “informed consent” to be photographed.
The APC said: “Given her condition, the woman was not capable of consenting in an informed way to participating in the posed photo session. For that reason, the coverage, despite the journalists’ belief they had informed consent, was unfair to the woman.”
