UK newspapers at all levels are being forced to make cuts at the moment. From Trinity Mirror’s Midlands titles, to Johnston Press’s Sheffield titles, to the Telegraph shedding more than 30 casual staff, to name but three examples.
The situation is if anything even worse in America, where Newsquest parent company Gannett is reportedly to cut 1,000 jobs.
The Atlanta Constitution-Journal which after a buy-out is sacking 70 people with a combined 1,000 years of service, as some-time newspaper executive and now Silicon Valley boss Alan Mutter writes.
And instead of the hassle of organising 70 separate leaving cards, the departing staff did the new media thing and made a joint leaving video using Brightcove.
The 23-minute film profiles each of the 70, showing their mugshot, job title and “favourite moment”.
