273-year-old Scots Magazine launches first app

The Scots Magazine – which claims to be one of the oldest magazines in the world still in publication– has embraced the digital age with the launch of its first app for the iPad and iPhone.

Publishers DC Thomson is hoping to capitalise on the large number of Scottish ex-pats, noting that 16 per cent of its print circulation is based outside the UK.

DC Thomson – whose other titles include The Beano, The Dandy, The People’s Friend and Animal Planet magazine – plans to launch an app for the Android platform in the near future.

The app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is free to download and comes with a free sample issue of the magazine for readers to sample.

Single issues of the monthly magazine can be bought for £1.99, a 6-month digital subscription  costs £10.99 and an annual subscription £19.99.

These new digital subscriptions sit alongside the standard annual print subscription of £25.

Scots Magazine editor Philip Smith said:

This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with Scots and lovers of Scotland around the world.

The magazine is 273 years old but we have to reflect the changing needs of our audience, and for many that means taking advantage of new technologies and ways to get our great content as far and wide as possible. Our new app puts the history, culture and wildlife of Scotland at your fingertips.
