Piers Morgan fears a repeat of his infamous scrap with Jeremy Clarkson at the 2004 British Press Awards – because they are both nominated for columnist of the year at this month’s event.
Former Mirror editor and Press Gazette proprietor Morgan writes:
Jeremy Clarkson and I have both been nominated for Columnist of the Year in this year’s British Press Awards. The last time we met at this august event was in March 2004, when Jeremy punched me three times in the head and missed with a flailing headbutt.
And I fear the worst should the unthinkable happen, and I pip him to the coveted title.
So I’m reaching out to you now, Jeremy, and begging you: please, please, try to show some self-restraint if I win.
Because if you don’t, then I have to warn you that I’ve been training in the gym for months, and you’re going to go down like a sack of spuds.
Speaking as one who was just yards away from the action during the 2004 fracas I have to say it seemed to me to be a case of handbags at 12 paces, with both would-be pugilists straining (not too hard) to lay hands on each other whilst being held back by amused colleagues.
