NUJ police harrassment claim outside Climate Camp

By Dominic Ponsford

The NUJ has accused police at the Climate Camp protest outside Kingsnorth power station in Kent of harassing journalists.

The union says that NUJ card-carrying journalists have been searched by police as they enter and leave the camp.

The NUJ has also complained that journalists have been “pushed and shoved” by police.

Photojournalists have complained to the NUJ that they were filmed by police whilst using Wifi at a nearby McDonalds.

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “The police must recognise that journalists have a job to do and allow them to go about their business. There are clear guidelines laying out how the police should deal with the media, and we expect these guidelines to be adhered to.”

NUJ Legal Officer Roy Mincoff said: ‘We are looking into various legal avenues to challenge this unwarranted conduct by the police. It is simply unacceptable for members of the press to be obstructed in their work in this way.”

Documentary photographer Jonathan Warren has sent Press Gazette a photo of police officers stopping and searching a freelance photographer outside the climate camp.

Warren said: “Officers continued to search him after he identified himself as a member of the press and showed his press card.”
