Met Police officer sacked for ‘supplying confidential information to a journalist’

By William Turvill

A Metropolitan Police officer has been sacked for "supplying confidential information to a journalist".

The force has declined to identify the officer, who was investigated under Operation Elveden.

The officer was suspended from duty on 12 February last year and dismissed following a hearing this Wednesday.

They were investigated by the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) department, supervised by the Independent Police Press Complaints Commission, as part of Operation Elveden. There are no criminal proceedings against them.

The DPS is the same department that used the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) to secretly obtain the phone records of The Sun as part of the Operation Alice investigation into Plebgate leaks.

A statement from the Met said: "The 52-year-old officer, a Detective Constable, faced allegations of gross misconduct of honesty and integrity, orders and instructions, confidentiality and discreditable conduct. These were in relation to the supplying of confidential information to a journalist."

There is no suggestion that the officer was paid money for the information.
