Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said Leveson part two has “got to be done”.
It has been widely reported this month that the Government has quietly shelved the second part of the Leveson Inquiry.
The first part examined the culture, practices and ethics of the British press and resulted in a 2,000-page report, published in November 2012.
The second part, which was to look at specific claims about phone-hacking at the News of the World and what went wrong with the original police investigation, was delayed pending the conclusion of criminal prosecutions.
But now these are over, Government sources have told newspapers the second part of the inquiry will not be going ahead.
Asked in an interview with the Huffington Post what he thought of this, Corbyn said: “I’m concerned that they are delaying on it. It’s got to be done. We cannot have this degree of practice going on.
“What was exposed was utterly appalling practices, intrusion on individuals and it’s got to stop.”
In the interview, Corbyn also reiterated his concerns with concentration of media ownership.
Asked if he would like to see his party pledge to new curbs on media ownership in its 2020 manifesto, Corbyn said: “I think there does need to be multiplicity of ownership.
"There does need to be a wide variety of it, and no crossover between broadcast and print media. That’s what I’d want to see.
"So I am looking at those issues and we will put forward something on it."
