The Independent Press Standards Organisation has announced two new appointments, including a director of external affairs.
Niall Duffy, who has formerly worked in communications roles for the RSPCA, Nestle and was most recently Flybe's director of communications, has taken up the newly created post. He will oversee external communications and engagement at IPSO.
IPSO chief executive Matt Tee said: "As IPSO carries out our work, it is vital that we communicate better and more regularly with all our stakeholders. Niall’s cross-sectoral experience will be hugely beneficial for the organisation, will strengthen our senior team and the Board and I are looking forward to working with him.”
IPSO has also announced the appointment of a new board member, Mehmuda Mian.
Mian is a former solicitor with "significant" non-executive work experience, including at the BBC Trust, where she was a trustee, and at the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
According to IPSO, Mian was appointed through an "open and transparent" process by the IPSO Appointments Panel, which is chaired by Sir Hayden Phillips.
Mian is replacing Dame Clare Tickell, who has moved to be chair of the Early Intervention Foundation.
IPSO chairman Sir Alan Moses, said: “We had a very strong field for the Board vacancy and I’m delighted that we have been able to appoint someone of Mehmuda’s calibre and experience. As IPSO develops its wider regulatory functions the role of the Board will be more and more important in overseeing independent, effective regulation of the press”.
Mian said: “A free and responsible press is fundamental. I am very pleased to have been appointed to bring my skills and experience to IPSO and to playing a part in ensuring that members of the public that feel mistreated by the press have somewhere to come to seek resolution.”
