England cricket ace receives substantial libel damages after Specsavers advert claim

By Darren Boyle

England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has been awarded substantial damages over an online advertisement that suggested he may have tampered with his bat.

The 33-year-old sport star was accused by Specsavers, who used a photograph of Pietersen as well as their tagline “Should have gone to Specsavers”.

The company accepted at the High Court in London that the claim was a “serious and defamatory allegation”.

The company produced the advert for their Facebook and Twitter feeds although as soon as a complaint was received they were removed.

It is understood that the company has agreed to pay Pietersen substantial damages as well as agreeing to settle his legal bills.

However, Pietersen announced on his official Twitter feed that he was donating the money to charity.
