Court of Protection extends scheme offering more access to journalists until August

By PA Media Lawyer

An experiment which gives journalists and members of the public more access to Court of Protection hearings has been extended and will now run until August.

Most hearings at the Court of Protection have been held in private, although judges sit in public when they consider issues relating to serious medical treatment.

A pilot scheme under which most hearings are held in public was launched early last year, and was initially scheduled to run for six months.

But officials say it has been extended and will now run until August.

The launch of the pilot scheme followed moves to allow reporters more access to family court hearings.

Judges normally make orders preventing disclosure of the identities of people involved in the litigation.
