The evident pride of launch editor June Smith-Sheppard, declaring
(Press Gazette , 21 January) that the new women’s weekly Pick Me Up is
“a category- defining new product that will reshape the weekly real
life sector” is baffling, and worrying.
Just who are these
readers she is planning to appeal to with this tripe, plumbing new
depths in journalism? Dumbing down doesn’t begin to describe this
magazine, apparently designed for the type of people who would have
flocked to Victorian freak shows.
Has the women’s weekly magazine
market dropped to this level and can we expect Smith-Sheppard to
continue the downward turn with further titles – Throw Up perhaps?
