ITV News and Media Trust launches second 'Breaking Into News' competition

ITV News and the Media Trust will have launched the second ‘Breaking Into News’ competition, a scheme aimed at discovering the top broadcast journalists of the future.

The initiative, fronted by ITV News presenters Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale, offers 18-25 year olds the chance to be mentored by experienced broadcast journalists from the ITV newsroom.

This year the competition has been expanded to cover nine regions, with a finalist chosen from reach region who will be given the opportunity to develop their ideas and turn them into a news report for their local ITV newsroom.

The nine finalists selected will present their news reports to a judging panel including Stewart and Nightingale and executives from ITV News and Media Trust. Each report will be considered for inclusion on an ITV News platform.

The winner will be presented given the opportunity to spend the day with the team producing the ITV News at Ten.

Entrants need to submit a short description about themselves and their backgrounds, what they’d like their report to focus on and why they deserve the opportunity to break into news at

Stewart said:

Breaking Into News is the perfect opportunity for those who have a story to tell and a passion for broadcast journalism. I’m proud to be supporting an initiative that opens up doors for young people from all walks of life and I am looking forward to seeing the final reports and to be working with the Media Trust again.

Kerry Thorpe, head of PR at Media Trust, said:

“We’re proud to partner with ITV News to reach out to a huge range of young people that might not normally have the opportunity to gain industry insight and expertise. Media is a powerful tool that can be used to encourage and inspire and this initiative enables young people from to talk about the things that matter to them most and get their voices heard.”
