Independent’s Johann Hari gets four Comment Awards nominations

Independent columnist, Johann Hari, is up for four awards at this year’s Editorial Intelligence Comment Awards, making him the most-nominated commentator across all categories.

He notches up four of the five nominations the Independent has been shortlisted for, including Commentariat of the Year, Best Environmental Comment, Cultural Commentator and Poison Pen: Polemicist of the Year.

Hari is no stranger to award ceremonies, last year he was the youngest person ever to be awarded the George Orwell Prize and in 2007 he was named Newspaper Journalist of the Year by Amnesty International.

The Times is the best-represented newspaper across the 12 categories with seven nominations, followed by the Independent and then the Financial Times with four.

There are 12 categories in total, with three candidates in each, as chosen by the judging panel, chaired by Sir Christopher Meyer, former chair of the Press Complaints Commission.

The winners will be announced on 13 October at a champagne breakfast where Sir Christopher will also announce the Chairman’s Choice award.
