Former Number 10 spokesman defends Lobby reporters

Former spokesman to Tony Blair and ex-Daily Mail reporter Tom Kelly has defended the way the Lobby operates in face of strong criticism from Alastair Campbell and his former boss.

At a debate at Westminster on the role of the lobby (Chatham House rules applied but The Mail’s Ben Brogan has lifted the lid somewhat), he said that the current system of reporting politics was the least-worst option. He argued for politicians to spell out big themes and announcements to give journalists what they want – stories with impact.
