There has been much in the papers recently about Mike Grannatt, the former head of the Government Information Service (GIS) who resigned as the Speaker’s press spokesman because he had been misled over £4,000 worth of taxi trips taken by Michael Martin’s wife.
Grannatt said he was leaving for “ethical reasons.”
But, in the meantime, my mole at Westminster telephones me to say: “He was certainly an old pro, who did well under the old John Major regime. I think he saw the part-time job as the Speaker’s spokesman as some sort of semi-retirement job, which he wasn’t exactly enjoying.”
Ah, so now we know.
