Press Gazette magazine December edition: Beware the Ghost of Fleet Street’s past

By Dominic Ponsford1

In December we have a bumper Christmas edition of Press Gazette as the Ghost of Fleet Street’s past comes back to haunt editors in the shape of Lord Justice Leveson.

We put this issue together before the latest excoriating testimony at Leveson yesterday from Charlotte Church and Paul McMullan. If anything the cover illustration now seems more apt.

Here are some of my highlights:

In-depth round-up of a soul-searching Society of Editors conference. Mirror editor Richard Wallace : “The Sun became a tool of the broader business ad political interests of the organisation.”

Investigation into the questions that are being raised over the way the reputations of some journalists have been unfairly trashed by being arrested and/or sacked in connection with phone-hacking.

John Dale on why national newspaper editors should open themselves up to public scrutiny: “It is time editors – indeed all journalists – were dragged kicking and screaming into the daylight. No more skulking in the shadows and hiding away. They must be prepared to turn their faces to the sun, and sometimes get burnt.”

Photography legend Kent Gavin on how he didn’t kill Doris Day’s dog.

Geoffrey Goodmanon why Hugh Cudlipp was the greatest ever British editor and why James Cameron was his favourite reporter.

Top tips on freelancing from Rhodri Marsden:“If you’re bright, diligent and relatively obedient you won’t end up having to scavenge through the bins for food.”

Alexi Mostrous from The Times on an investigation which revealed that killer doctors are being allowed to continue to practice in the UK.
