Pakistan government lifts Geo News ban but forces two programmes to be dropped

By Julie Tomlin GR

The ban imposed by President Pervez Musharraf following the imposition of emergency rule on Pakistan’s popular news channel Geo News ended this week after nearly three months.

It is unclear whether ban was lifted as a result of the channel agreeing to sign a code of conduct but it is speculated that the channel had to agree to keep two political talk shows hosted by Shahid Masood and Hamid Mir off the air.

Reporters Without Borders said it welcomed the stations’ return, but “deplores the fact that President Pervez Musharraf made it conditional on the suppression of some its programmes.”
