Journalism Weekly: How Met legal actions hampered Sunday Times exposure of crime boss David Hunt

By Dominic Ponsford

You'd think that the Met Police would be pleased to help The Sunday Times succeed where it had failed, and expose notorious crime boss David Hunt. So why did the Met sue the paper and launch a huge leak inquiry when it was presented with evidence, not only of Hunt's criminal activity – but of the police force's own failings?

Read all about it in this week's Press Gazette – Journalism Weekly. .

Other highlights include:

  • News that Sun editor David Dinsmore has banned 'byline bandits' from the newsroom after Press Gazette highlighted the issue three weeks ago

  • From ten police officers raiding his home at 5.45am to having his named cleared by the CPS. Sunday Mirror crime reporter Justin Penrose becomes the 11th arrested UK journalist cleared, after spending a year on police bail

  • HuffPo UK editor Carla Buzasi insists her site is more than just aggregation and endless blogs as it marks the second anniversary of its UK launch

  • How Press Association used nearly 20 journalists to cover one tennis match and why its proud tradition of objectivity may slip a little when it comes to Andy Murray

  • Tips for freelances on how to market yourself online

  • And how Sunday Times journalist Michael Gillard made mincemeat of Hugh Tomlinson QC in court when the Hacked Off chairman represented crime boss David Hunt in his libel battle with the paper.
